The NWPTA is an intergovernmental trade agreement signed by the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Established with the aim of creating a single, harmonious economic region, it removes trade barriers, harmonizes regulations, and promotes a more open and competitive market across these provinces.

New West Partnership Trade Agreement

What is New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA)?

The NWPTA, which came into effect in July 1, 2010, and has been fully implemented since July 1, 2013., is a trade agreement between the Provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The NWPTA:

  • Establishes Canada’s largest interprovincial, barrier-free marketplace among these four provinces.
  • Treats businesses, investors and workers of the other provinces at least as favourably as they treat their own or those of another jurisdiction.
  • creates a framework for cooperation to bolster the economy of western Canada.
  • Avoid actions that limit or make it harder to trade goods, invest, or move workers between these provinces.
  • represents an economic powerhouse of more than 11 million people with a combined GDP of over $720 billion.

The NWPTA provides a comprehensive framework to enhance trade, investment and labour mobility within the four western provinces.

This agreement facilitates easier movement of goods, services, labor, and investment within Western Canada.
